Hikes in Erdalen
Erdalen is one of the finest summer-farm valleys in Oppstryn. The landscape is open and expansive, yet also majestic, with high, steep mountains and glaciers. The valley provides good grazing for cattle, and you will find two well-maintained summer farms.
The two summer farms are Erdalssetra, also known as Heimesetra or Storesetra, and Vesledalssetra. Both have a long and interesting history.
At Vesledalssetra, Erdalen divides into two valleys: Storedalen, which runs to the southeast, and Vesledalen, which runs eastwards.
At the head of Storedalen lies Erdalsbreen glacier. Today, a large glacial lake lies in front of the glacier. From the lake you can continue towards Strynekåpa. From the summit, you get a magnificent view of Erdalen and Lodalskåpa. The much-used droving route for livestock ran through Storedalen, across Erdalsbreen, to Jostedalen. This traffic came to an end around 1920.
At the head of Vesledalen lies Vesledalsbreen glacier. From here it is possible to cross over to the tourist cabin Slæom in the Mysubyttdalen valley in Skjåk municipality.
On the way to Vesledalsbreen you pass Fossen, a powerful waterfall, and an idyllic glacial lake beyond it.

Erdalssetra
Erdalssetra is one of our most beautiful summer farms. The landscape is open and free, but high, steep mountain walls are still not far away. Glaciers lie in the mountains and constantly send snow and rocks down the mountain sides, and the river runs in rapids down the valley.

Vesledalssetra
Vesledalssetra has long been the starting point for trips across the Jostedalsbreen. For several generations, glacier guides led tourists across the glacier to Skjåk and Sogn, and livestock traders led large herds of cattles across the glacier to Fåbergstølen and further on towards Austlandet.

Erdalsbreen
