Røvasteinane (The Foxes’ Stones)

These stones were at a convenient height for sitting and resting when people returned from the summer farm carrying heavy milk pails on their backs. It was common along all pasture trails to have a designated resting stone, or even several, which were simply called “Kvile” (Rest).

When carrying heavy loads to or from the summer farm, it was a relief to drop down onto a suitably sized stone – and since the local dialect uses the word "røva" for the backside, the name Røvasteinane may have originated from this practice.
However, it is more likely that the name comes from fox dens that once existed in the cavities beneath the stones. In the local dialect, “rev” (fox) is pronounced “røv”, which could explain the origin of the name.
