Fosdalen Nature and Culture Trail - Post 4
Dry stone wall at Holane
You are now walking along a stone wall, a sight that is becoming increasingly rare. These walls were built gradually as the land was cultivated. The work involved is remarkable, considering that it was done using only simple tools. Unlike modern wire fences, stone walls required little maintenance and have lasted for generations.
Today, stone walls are valued elements of the traditional agricultural and cultural landscape. It is prohibited to remove them without special permission. Stone walls built before 1850 are automatically protected as cultural heritage sites.
Here, we see an old farm barn belonging to the Sandvik farm, owned by Per Ivar Skåre.
In the foreground, part of an old stone wall is visible, a reminder of traditional farming practices and landscape management in the area.
