Post 4: Dry stone wall at Holane
Here you should make a sharp turn to the left and follow the stone wall further uphill for quite a distance. Such stone walls have gradually become a rare sight. This one was built long ago, as the nearby land was cultivated. It is an impressive piece of work carried out with simple tools. These walls (fences) required little maintenance compared to today’s wire fences.
Stone walls are now regarded as important elements of the traditional agricultural and cultural landscape in rural areas. It is not permitted to remove them without special permission. Stone walls built before 1850 are automatically protected as cultural heritage monuments.
If we continue following the tractor road uphill, we will see an old cowshed belonging to the Sandvik farm. The owner is Per Ivar Skåre. In the foreground, we can see part of an old stone wall.
