Fosdalen Nature and Culture Trail - Post 9

Setrebakken

This is the last hill before you reach the summer farm. It is also the steepest slope on the farm road, making it a tough climb with a load on your back. The name "Setrebakken" is commonly found at many summer farms. In the upper part of Setrebakken, the landscape opens up, revealing the cabins at Fosdalssetra.

We see an old birch tree where bracket fungus growdensely on the lower part of the trunk. Bracket fungus are a large group of fungi that primarily grow on old trees. They are parasites that break down the wood. Many of these fungi play an important role in the ecosystem.

A landowner has done a great job clearing the forest and keeping the terrain open around the cabins and along the entire trail. Due to the lack of grazing animals, new shoots (root sprouts from trees) continue to grow.
